Mundelein not living up to hopes for business

Who's really in charge at Mundelein Village Hall? The duly elected mayor and trustees, or the firmly entrenched administrators, department heads, and sundry bureaucrats?

Judging by the recent actions of the mayor and board, it seems to be the latter. The anti-business climate casting a cloud over the downtown is still ominous after many years, having survived at least the last three previous administrations and several new village boards.

Notwithstanding all the high hopes Mundelein put in fresh "leadership," downtown sunshine and any real progress remain elusive. Is the tail wagging the dog?

Is there an aversion to actual leadership here, and in its place deferring to un-elected employees?

The present mayor at first held such promise for constructive change, but has since proven he is choosing to follow in the miscarried steps of his predecessors. More onerous ordinances, more costs and burdens on business, and more hoops for hardworking people to jump through.

Dear new trustees, Mr. Rekus, Mr. Norton and Mr. Russell: I hope and trust you are up to reversing direction and radically altering the failed policies of the village. Please erase the mistakes of the past, and sponsor new village initiatives to allow business people and landlords in Mundelein to do what they are best at - serving the public.

Business people don't need village hall to improve Mundelein, but you need them - if you really want it to happen.
