Softball: Lake County roundup

Katie Malek fired a 1-hitter, Sarah Schnecker drove in the only run, and Lake Zurich's softball team upset host Buffalo Grove 1-0 in a Class 4A regional semifinal Thursday.

Malek struck out seven and walked one, as the ninth-seeded Bears advanced to Saturday's 11 a.m. Buffalo Grove regional final against No. 15 Glenbrook North.

Schnecker gave Malek the only run she needed against No. 5 Buffalo Grove with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Jessie Puccinelli doubled and scored.

Grayslake Central 13, Chicago Payton 0: At Lakes, Juliana Frusolone was 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI for the Rams in the Class 3A regional semifinal against the No. 12 seed.

No. 5 Grayslake Central (16-20) will play No. 4 Lakes at 4:30 p.m. today in the regional final.

The Rams received 2 hits and 2 RBI apiece from Teagan Truskowski, Lindsay Brust and Maddie Marshall. Truskowski and Brandy Heraty tripled, while Katie Strickland doubled.

Reagen Radke (10-13) threw 4 no-hit innings, striking out eight. Payton managed a single in the fifth.

Libertyville 5, Stevenson 4: At Libertyville, the Wildcats survived against the 14th-seeded Huskies.

No. 3 Libertyville will play No. 10 Stevenson in the Class 4A regional final at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Prairie Ridge 7, Grant 2: At Grayslake North, Sarah Rohloff went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI for the second-seeded Wolves.

Grant had just 5 hits off Hailey Baker, who went the distance in the circle. Prairie Ridge will face top-seeded McHenry in Saturday's Class 4A regional final at 11 a.m.

Stevenson 7, Deerfield 6: On Wednesday at Libertyville, the 10th-seeded Patriots scored all of their runs late to rally past the No. 7 seed in a Class 4A regional semifinal.

Stevenson (13-15) will play in the regional championship game at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Trisha Porzycki had a 2-run double and also made a game-saving play from right field, throwing out the tying run at home from about 200 feet away. Taylor Koenigs went 2-for-4. Myra Peterson pitched a complete game, allowing 9 hits and striking out four in 7 innings.

After Deerfield hit a 2-run home run to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, Stevenson responded with three runs in the fifth and added four more in the sixth, through a combination of small ball and aggressive baserunning. The Pats played error-free defensively.
