New Arlington Heights police station could cost $26M-$29M

Five plans are before village board

A new police station for Arlington Heights could cost between $26 million and $29 million, according to new estimates.

Tonight, trustees will discuss cost estimates for five different plans for the new police station presented by FGM Architects.

All five estimates are far below $40 million, an amount that was discussed in 2010 and met with resistance among some officials and residents.

Each of the concept plans being discussed tonight call for building a new police station on its current site near village hall.

The village board will discuss the different plans and costs at 8 p.m. Tuesday at village hall, 33 S. Arlington Heights Road. The concept plans can be viewed online at www.vah.com.

The police station was built in the 1970s. Officials have said it is long past its useful life, does not have enough space for modern-day policing and is costly to maintain.

Plans for a new facility include a 70,500-square-foot, two-story building with a basement and a 10,500-square-foot garage for indoor parking.

The building would include evidence storage, a firing range, fitness center, locker rooms and training facilities in the basement, cells, room for patrol, investigations, records and evidence on the first floor, and administration, a multipurpose room, traffic officers and community service officers on the second floor.

The new police station, though, is several years off, as it is budgeted for a spring 2017 construction start date.

Officials said the costs of the new building would be comparable to new police stations recently built in Palatine, Hoffman Estates and Elk Grove.

The village has said the project would not increase resident property tax bills because the loan would replace other debt that is being retired.
