Congressman honors Aurora Marine killed in Nepal

Congressman Bill Foster paid homage to Aurora's fallen Marine Cpl. Sara A. Medina Wednesday in a brief speech on the House floor in Washington, D.C. Medina, 23, a Marine combat photographer, died May 12 while helping with relief efforts after the Nepal earthquake when a helicopter crashed, killing the East Aurora High School graduate and five others. Barlett prom queen makes her mark

For the first time in Bartlett High School history, students elected a special needs student prom queen. Senior Brittany Corder, a popular special needs student with Down syndrome, won by an overwhelming number of votes, said a statement from her mother that was confirmed by the school. Full story.

State lawmaker's plan to curb heroin abuse moves forward

The most far-reaching anti-heroin legislation in Springfield jumped another hurdle Wednesday when a House committee sent it to the full House. The plan includes increased use of heroin antidotes, better drug education and improvements to the state's Prescription Monitoring Program that ensures patients aren't receiving more opioid pain medication than is needed. Hampshire man remembered as generous, avid cyclist

Dennis Jurs, an avid cyclist who played a key role in bringing major bike races to Elgin, was remembered as a warm, soft-spoken man who was always generous with fellow cyclists. Jurs, 68, of Hampshire, died riding his bike in a collision with a vehicle Monday afternoon at Walker and Allen roads in an unincorporated area near Hampshire. Full story.

Glendale Heights field of flags honors fallen troops

Hundreds of Glendale Heights elementary students helped create a field of flags Wednesday in Veterans Memorial Park in Glendale Heights in honor fallen American servicemen and women. Some 6,845 flags will be planted. The Illinois Fallen Heroes Traveling Memorial Wall is also at the park in honor of Memorial Day. Full story.
