Prospect grabs share of MSL East title

Prospect's share of the Mid-Suburban East baseball title required some patience.

A day after the rest of the league had completed their conference games, Prospect still had one game left, against visiting Rolling Meadows.

And it took 10 innings to decide.

Prospect senior Mike Piotrowski came up with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th as the Knights won 5-4 to finish in a tie with Elk Grove for the MSL East crown.

Elk Grove will host West Division champ Barrington in Friday's MSL title game due to an edge over Prospect in tiebreaker criterion.

Prospect (23-7, 12-4) produced 14 hits, drew 5 walks and benefitted from 5 errors commited by Rolling Meadows, but the Knights left 16 runners on base.

Seniors Jake Cavaiani and Lucas Karz both finished with 3 hits for Prospect. Cavaiani drove in 2 runs.

Tyler Damasky started and pitched 4⅔ innings; Nick Donzelli allowed 1 hit over the next 5⅓ innings of scoreless work to get the win.

Elk Grove 10, Maine West 4: The host Grens got a 3-for-4 plate performance from Matt Wary, including a triple, in a nonconference victory.

Christian Camacho drove in 2 runs and finished 2-for-4 from his leadoff spot, and A.J. Lorenz and Taylor O'Connor also had 2 hits and 2 RBI apiece as Elk Grove (20-8) picked up victory No. 20 of the season.

Hersey 4, Glenbrook North 3: The host Huskies made the most of their 4 hits to pick up a nonconference victory.

Starter Jimmy Mijal earned the win after allowing 1 earned run in 4 innings. Buzz Lindgren pitched 2 innings before Nick Zouras got a save by getting the last three outs.

Zouras also drove in a run with a single, and Owen Goldsberry drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

Hersey (11-17-1) has won three of its last four.
