14-year-old charged with setting fire to cars in Aurora

A 14-year-old Aurora boy is charged with setting a fire that damaged a dozen vehicles in a parking lot Saturday on the city's west side.

The boy was charged with two counts of felony arson through the Kane County state's attorney's office, Aurora police said Tuesday.

The boy, whose name was not released because he is a juvenile, is being held in the Kane County Youth Home in St. Charles. He was arrested without incident Sunday night at his home, according to a police news release.

Police say they also have identified a second juvenile suspect and believe charges will be forthcoming.

The 12 vehicles were found burning about 2 a.m. Saturday inside a privately-owned gated parking lot at Highland Avenue and Charles Street. Authorities said the fire caused roughly $48,000 worth of damage to nine sedans, two SUVs and a van. Officials say the lot apparently is used by someone who buys and sells used vehicles.

No injuries were reported.

Aurora Fire Department arson investigators and Aurora police worked on the investigation.
