Softball: Northwest roundup

Senior Leah Barrett pitched the final four innings to earn the win for Fremd as the Vikings rallied for a 9-5 senior day victory over visiting Palatine.

More importantly, the game featured Cancer Awareness Day with the teams wearing special T-shirts in a fundraiser event.

Vikings softball coach Jim Weaver, who started the tradition four years ago in honor of his father-in-law Dennis Lynch, watched the Vikings improve to 24-6 and finish third in the MSL West at 12-4.

Barrett improved to 9-1 for Fremd.

Elk Grove 16, Wheeling 0 (5 inn.): Sophomore Kylie Thomsen (12-3) threw her first no-hitter and struck out 13 of the 16 batters she faced in the five-inning MSL East game.

Buffalo Grove 9, Prospect 2: Visiting Buffalo Grove (17-7, 9-6) scored 3 runs apiece in the third, fourth and fifth innings to win the MSL East game.

Prospect senior Casey Lenski belted her tenth homer of the season into the wind for a 2-run homer in the bottom of the third inning.

It made her the all-time leading home run hitter at Prospect.

Emily Carnes had an infield hit in the Bison's third inning Nikki Longdon singled to drive her home.

In the fourth inning, Catino double home Morini. Winning pitcher Julia Camardo had a single in the inning.

With 2 outs in the bottom of the fifth, Morini reached base on an error. Catino followed with a single before an RBI double by Katie Fontanetta double.

"I'm genuinely happy that Casey (Lenski) broke the record," said Prospect coach Jim Adair. "She didn't know anything about the career home run chase, and I didn't want to jinx her."

Adair said the Knights (10-16, 5-11) played well at certain times.

"But Buffalo Grove is so good that you have to play the whole game," he added. "Delilah Malczewski (4-10) pitched a great game. we just didn't support her and BG is too good of a team to give extra outs. Camardo is a great pitcher and their hitters capitalized on our defensive mistakes."
