214@100: AVID prepares first generation students for college

Impressive statistics have come from Wheeling High School's Advancement Via Individual Determination classroom. AVID, part of the curriculum at Wheeling and Rolling Meadows high schools, offers additional guidance to primarily first-generation college students to ensure their success after high school.

Specifically, AVID encourages students to academically and mentally prepare for college. Wheeling's program began seven years ago, and the team's - and students' - hard work has paid off.

On average, Wheeling's AVID students have higher grade-point averages than similar peers who are not in the program, and 100 percent of the program's graduates have been accepted to four-year universities.
