Nicholson hammers down national title

Harper College sophomore Joslyn Nicholson became a national champion Thursday.

The Cary-Grove product threw the hammer 40.57 meters on the first day of the NJCAA Division III national championships in Utica, N.Y., to take top honors, 1 meter better than her nearest competitor.

Nicholson's teammate Shayan Dussard took fourth place in the event with a throw of 38.13 meters.

Nicholson also finished second in the triple jump at 10.85 meters, just one one-hundredth of the winning mark.

In the men's hammer throw, Harper's Laith Kanan placed second and Brad Walls was third.

Other point-scoring performances for the Hawks included the men's 3,200-meter relay (third, 8:08.39) and Adam Brauer in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (seventh, 10:35.90).
