Self-defense class in Vernon Hills

Vernon Hills police will host a women's self-defense class from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, at Vernon Hills High School, 145 Lakeview Parkway. This class is free and open to residents age 8 and up. The instructor is Harriet Johnson, a former police officer who has more than 38 years of teaching experience in all aspects of self-defense and use of weapons. Johnson also is the director of the Criminal Justice program at McHenry County College. Topics to be covered include: basic principles of survival and awareness; vulnerable areas of the body; psychology of fear and how to make it work for you; and the basic principles of self-defense.
