Blackwell students show Deaf Can Do It at community service day

Ten deaf and hard-of-hearing students from Schaumburg School District 54's Elizabeth Blackwell School participated in the fourth annual Deaf Can Do It Community Service Day on Friday, May 1.

The theme of this year's service day was "People Helping People."

The group chose to help the charity, Feed My Staving Children. The students made posters and went on the broadcast to explain their project to the entire school and community. They collected change from classrooms daily for an entire week and made graphs so the student body could follow their progress. At the end, they showed the check to the students and thanked them for all their donations. "Change for children" was their mantra for the week and their vision "no child will go hungry."

The group wanted to raise $300, however, the Blackwell students exceeded that goal and raised $500 to present a donation to Feed My Starving Children. But they didn't stop there, they also took a field trip and worked at the warehouse to show their commitment to this very special project.

These 10 deaf and hard-of-hearing students worked tirelessly packing meals and represented Blackwell School as well. This session packed enough meals to feed 25 children for an entire year. Everyone at Blackwell is proud of their accomplishments.
