Call for end to anti-Israel movement

In a strong show of courage, Illinois congressman Peter Roskam has called for an end to the anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement that has spread widely across college campuses over the past several years. Fostering hatred toward pro-Israel groups without opposition from university authorities, this movement fails all principles of academic freedom.

Congressman Roskam has gained bipartisan support in his legislative effort. HR 4009, the Academic Freedom Bill, blocks federal funding for American universities engaging in a boycott of Israeli academic institutions or scholars. This ensures taxpayer dollars are not used to fund bigoted attacks against Israel, undermining fundamental principles of academic freedom. With HR 825, the U.S. Israel Trade and Commercial Enhancement Act, congressman Roskam discourages U.S. trade partners from discriminating against Israel to the detriment of global trade, and regional peace and stability.

Across the globe, countries seek to isolate and de-legitimize Israel through BDS. This discrimination thwarts economic growth and ignores the role that Israel has played in securing the freedom of thousands of individuals who seek refuge from oppression from elsewhere in the Middle East.

As co-chair of the House Republican Israel Caucus, congressman Roskam has been a leading force in the fight against the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement against Israel. I believe he recognizes this movement as harmful to economic stability and cooperation internationally, as Israel exports new products, business and technology worldwide. I applaud the congressman's efforts.
