Volunteers are needed to help with shelter's dogs, cats

Want to make a real difference in the life of a shelter animal? The Buddy Foundation, 65 W. Seegers Road, in Arlington Heights, needs you.

The Buddy Foundation is unique in the fact that they we are all volunteers; not a single person is paid. All of our time, energy and funds go directly to the care of our animals.

Volunteers are especially needed for the Cat Bright Start Team, which provides the first meal of the day to the cats between the hours of 7-11 a.m.; cleans the cat rooms and cages; changes blankets and bedding; scoops and cleans litter boxes; and does laundry.

Also, loving cat foster parents are needed to provide special needs shelter cat(s) a little extra TLC. Open your home to feline leukemia/feline aids, diabetic cats or nurture and care for kittens before they are of age to come to the shelter.

We are also looking for help with publicity.

Buddy is always in need of that special volunteer who loves animals and is willing to do almost any task, no matter how large or small. If you are that person, are 18 years or older, and can give time on a regular basis, we need you.

Some of the other volunteer jobs include walking dogs, cleaning their cages, feeding etc. For cats, we also clean cages, litter boxes, floors etc.

If you want to be a general volunteer and have no specific interest, we can also use your help around the shelter to do laundry, fold it, put it in proper locations, mop floors, clean windows, etc.

There are all many things to do around the shelter. We have a meeting room that has a microwave and refrigerator, all of which need cleaning from time to time. On special occasions we have other duties, such as manning a booth at an event, collating the newsletter and getting it ready for posting, sewing or making dog and cat beds, doing yard work such as pulling weeds, deadheading flowers, and watering the gardens etc. If you have the time we will find the work for you.

Pick up a volunteer form or visit www.thebuddyfoundation.org/forms/volunteer_application.pdf. Fill out the application and return it to Buddy. Carmella is the volunteer coordinator and will give you a call to set up an interview. Indicate whether you want to help with cats/dogs, or any other specific task.

Owen is a 56-pound, male, shepherd/husky mix, who is about 1½ years old. He is young and energetic and would love to have some space to run. He likes to play with his toys, go for walks, and even bike rides. Owen is friendly with new people and would be better in a home with older children. Courtesy of The Buddy Foundation
