COD President Breuder taking medical leave

College of DuPage President Robert Breuder will go on “approved medical leave” beginning Wednesday, according to a one-sentence statement released by the college late Tuesday. The announcement comes as a reform group that has won control of the school's board of trustees revealed its plans to put Breuder on administrative leave as soon as Thursday as part of sweeping changes at the embattled school. Deputy says shooter yelled: “If we're gonna do this, let's do this. Airborne!”

A Holiday Hills man and Army veteran yelled, “Airborne!” before firing a volley of shots through his front door in October 2014, wounding two McHenry County Sheriff's deputies, one of them testified Tuesday. The trial of Scott B. Peters, 52, who faces life in prison for attempted murder, began with testimony about the gunfight. Full story.

Elburn police officer charged with child sexual assault

An Elburn police officer has been charged with preying on and sexually assaulting a child he knew for 10 years. David Wright, of Campton Hills, was being held on $500,000 bail. Kane County prosecutors say the assaults took place between March 2005 and April 2015, and the victim was younger than 13 when the assaults began. Full story.

Autopsy shows police shooting victim had alcohol, marijuana in his system

The Waukegan teen who died in a police-involved shooting had small amounts of alcohol and marijuana in his body when he was killed, autopsy results released Tuesday showed. Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd also said 17-year-old Justus Howell's death was ruled a homicide. Lake County State's Attorney Michael Nerheim said the investigation continues to determine whether the April 4 shooting was a “justifiable homicide.” Full story.

Gene & Georgetti to open July 6 in Rosemont

The new Gene & Georgetti restaurant is scheduled to open to the public July 6 in Rosemont, officials announced Tuesday. The restaurant and event space now being renovated at 9421 W. Higgins Road will serve as the only other Gene & Georgetti location. The original location opened in Chicago's River North neighborhood in 1941, and today stands as the oldest family-owned steakhouse in the city. Full story.

Three nonprofits commit to leases at Barrington White House

Three local nonprofit organizations will be moving in to the Barrington White House this summer. Barrington Area Conservation Trust, Barrington Children's Charities and Let It Be Us will move their operations to the second floor of the building, located at 145 W. Main St., as soon as August. White Sox will play in Baltimore Wednesday in empty stadium

The White Sox will play the Baltimore the Orioles Wednesday at 1:05 p.m. in an empty stadium because of safety concerns over riots and violence in the city sparked by the controversial death of Freddie Gray. The game will be closed to the public and it will mark the first time in major-league history a game is played with no fans in the seats. Full story.
