Cary-Grove's Freeman wins McHenry discus title

Total domination.

With a record-setting throw of 133-04, Nikki Freeman easily grabbed top honors in the discus at Thursday's opening night of the McHenry County Track & Field Meet held at Huntley High School.

The Cary-Grove junior claimed her second straight county discus crown.

Crystal Lake South's Katrina Ransom was a distant second with a toss of 105-08.

"The discus ring was slick and I had to change shoes and I had to adjust," said Freeman. "I am happy being consistently throwing in the 130s. My goal is to throw 155 by the end of the season."

Friday's running events at Huntley begin at 5 p.m.

Cary-Grove's Nicole Robins joined Freeman in the winner's circle for the Trojans by winning the high jump with a leap of 5-2.

Huntley senior Macy Tramblay, who will compete collegiately at Division I Colorado State, won the triple jump with a leap of 35-10.5. Cary-Grove's Delaney Perrone was right on Tramblay's heels with a second-place finish with a jump of 35-8.5. It was Tramblay's second consecutive title in the event.

"It was a little chilly but there was no wind and good conditions to jump," said Tramblay. "I like the format in the county meet. I didn't have to worry about any running events. It helps to compete at home. I am familiar with the conditions.''

In the shot put, Crystal Lake South's Kianna Clark edged Freeman to take top honors. Clark tossed the shot 38-10.5 while Freeman was the runner-up with a throw of 38-8.5.

Caleigh Walsh of Jacobs took the long jump with a leap of 17-4.5.

Boys: Kyle Hedge knew he had to be at his best to win the county shot put title.

The Crystal Lake South senior was.

Hedge's toss of 59-5.5 was good enough to place first in the event.

'There is so much talent in this event," said Hedge. "I knew I had to be at my best. It is awesome to win this event. I know I have to keep getting better if I am going to achieve my goal of qualifying for the state meet."

Cary-Grove's Ricky Hurley, who was second behind Hedge in the shot put (56-7), claimed the discus with a throw of 173-1. Huntley's Issac Jimenez was second with a throw of 164-06.

Huntley junior Sean Patel was victorious in the triple jump with a leap of 43-3.25. Cary-Grove's Frank San Fillippo placed second with a jump of 42-2.5

"I changed my footing in practice this week," said Patel. "I felt good and jumped very well."
