Elgin death still under investigation, officials say

An autopsy yesterday determined a 20-year-old Elgin man died of multiple gunshot wounds, the Kane County coroner's office said, but both police and the coroner's office declined to label the death a homicide yet. Daniel Figueroa was found Saturday at Prairie Street and Grove Avenue. Full story.

Death of Arlington Heights girl under investigation

Arlington Heights police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl who was found unresponsive and later died at a Chicago hospital. Hailey Yale died at Lurie Children's Hospital at 11:35 p.m. Friday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Full story.

Three years for truck driver in fatal crash near Aurora

A truck driver found guilty of operating under fatigue and failing to comply with hours of service requirements was sentenced yesterday to three years in prison in connection with a fiery fatal crash along I-88 last year. A semitrailer truck driven by Renato Velasquez, 47, of Hanover Park, crashed into and killed tollway worker Vincent Petrella of Wheeling and severely injured state Trooper Doug Balder - who yesterday said he did not believe Velasquez's apology in court. Mental fitness exam for man accused of threatening Gurnee police, Lake courthouse

A mental health fitness evaluation has been ordered for a California man accused of threatening to "light up" the Gurnee police headquarters and the Lake County courthouse in 2014, Lake County prosecutors said. Police charged Pederson with making a terrorist threat. He remains in Lake County jail. Full story.

State: Case not made for razing historic Geneva school

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency has said Kane County's plan to tear down the former Sixth Street School is premature given its eligibility to join the National Register of Historic Places. Instead the county should analyze alternatives, such as mothballing the building, incorporating the building in to any proposed development, or selling the building to somebody else, officials say.
