Wheeling man shot in the groin faces weapons charge

A Wheeling man and self-described gang member who was found by police sitting in a car with a gunshot wound to his groin early Sunday has been charged with a weapons violation, Cook County prosecutors said.

Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo Tuesday ordered Kevin Trujillo, 20, held on a total bail of $55,000.

Trujillo, who was on parole for a 2013 aggravated DUI conviction, had ammunition in his pockets, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney David Shin. Police did not recover a gun.

Police found Trujillo sitting in a car shortly after midnight and took him to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Shin said. Authorities said it was unclear who shot him.

Trujillo, whose pending cases include driving on a revoked license and consumption of alcohol by a minor, has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

He next appears in court on the weapons charge on May 11.
