WildStang Robotics Teams continue their success
The WildStang Robotics Teams placed fourth out of 53 teams at the FIRST Robotics Competition Midwest Regional earlier this month at the University of Illinois at Chicago Pavilion.
Junior Veronica Boratyn also received the FIRST Dean's List Finalist Award, which is presented to two students who exemplify hard work, creativity and giving back to the community.
Boratyn was the driving force behind the Miss Maker Fair that the WildStang team sponsored last fall to excite middle school girls about science, technology, engineering and mathematic.
The fair attracted 30 girls ages 9 to 13, giving them hands-on STEM activities that made them think about future opportunities and careers in these fields.
Boratyn will be considered for further recognition at the World Championship, which will be held April 22-25 in St. Louis.
At the competition, which included teams from 10 other states and Turkey, WildStang also received the Creativity Award sponsored by Xerox for the innovative drive train the students designed. Mentor Steve Garward received the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award for his excellent mentorship of students on the team.
The name of the competition is Recycle Rush. Two alliances of three robots each score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with Recycling containers and properly disposing of pool noodles, representing litter.
The WildStang team will compete at the World Championship later this month. In the team's 20-year history, students have won three world championships and finished in second place twice.
