Special sheriff's police patrols

Lake County sheriff's police plan to continue a stepped-up patrol in an effort to catch drunken drivers through Saturday. Police said the effort is running from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. and is focused at Lewis Avenue and Beach Road in Beach Park. "The roadside safety check is an effective tool for generating voluntary compliance by the motoring public," Sheriff Mark Curran said in a news release. Deputies working the details are looking for drivers operating vehicles in an unsafe manner, driving with a suspended or revoked driver's license, seat belt violations and other potential violations. The extra patrols are funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
