Garage fire spreads to home in Aurora

An Aurora family lost their garage and some of their home's roof to fire Sunday afternoon, fire officials said.

Battalion Chief Don Jackley said the fire is believed to have started at around 1 p.m. in the attached garage on the house on the corner of Parker Avenue and Hinman Street before spreading to the roof and attic.

Jackley said firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze within 20 to 25 minutes without complication. He said they were able to save most of the house, but the garage was a total loss. He said first responders had to haul out the burned-out rubble of the garage. The damage was estimated at around $30,000.

Jackley said the seven people who lived in the house were able to evacuate before firefighters arrived on the scene. He said there were smoke detectors installed in the home, but the fire had been burning in the garage for some time before the detectors went off.

No one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
