Conant grabs tourney title at Sandburg

Conant took top honors in the Sandburg boys water polo tournament on Saturday.

The Cougars prevailed against Andrew 9-7 in the title game after earning two victories earlier in the day.

Senior goalie Jake Lawson was the named the tournament's most valuable player.

Earlier, senior Connor Schmitz helped the Cougars earn a 7-6 victory over Sandburg by scoring 5 goals, and Conant advanced to the championship game by handling Lincoln-Way North 12-5.

In the most recent rankings from illpolo.com, both Sandburg (No. 12) and Andrew (15) were ranked well above Conant (23), which improved to 15-1 overall.

The Cougars will host Barrington on Monday in the first event to be held in the school's renovated pool, with the varsity game starting at 5:30 p.m.

Barrington is unbeaten at 19-0 and leads the Mid-Suburban West with a 7-0 divisional record. The only team Conant (6-1) has lost to within the division is Barrington.
