Palatine takes runner-up spot in own tourney

Bremen edged Palatine 4-3 on Saturday to win the championship of the girls water polo tournament hosted by the Pirates on Saturday.

Four players scored from Bremen in the title game, while Caroline Wojtas, Kristin Anderson and Mathilde Mogensen found the net for Palatine and goalie Tess O'Brien made 14 saves.

The Pirates counted earlier wins over Lincoln-Way East (9-5) and Prospect (9-2).

Against Prospect, Wojtas had 5 goals and Mogensen 2 while O'Brien stopped 14 shots.

Wojtas (8 goals) and Anderson (1) paced the offense against L-Way East, with O'Brien making 10 saves.

• St. Charles North got 3 goals from Katie Quinn and 2 from Brittany Veto and Cassy Hauserman to top Lincoln-Way East 11-8 in the third-place game.

• Wheeling edged Prospect 5-4 in the fifth-place game, getting 4 goals from senior Theresa Godlewski and 7 saves from goalie Jenna Pink.

Prospect had single goals from Michelle Vuong, Gracie Dix, Ann Fulk and Niki Neumann, plus an 8-save effort from goalie Lauren Broz.

Wheeling is unbeaten in the Mid-Suburban East race, with Prospect its closest pursuer. They meet for a second time in divisional play on Tuesday.
