Baseball: Northwest roundup

Maine West made the most of 4 hits in topping visiting Wheeling 5-4 on Saturday in noconference baseball action.

Crosley Duckmann ended up scoring the go-ahead run after an error in the fifth inning. Kyle Divelbiss drove in 2 runs for Maine West (8-6), and Troy Johnson had a double.

Wheeling came up with 8 hits, including a double by Nathan Cooney and a triple by Matt Vollmer.

Alex Zimmerman earned a victory after allowing 1 earned run in 3 innings.

Nazareth sweeps Viator: In the first game, Dan Sullivan homered and drove in a pair of runs in a 2-for-3 effort at the plate for St. Viator, but visiting Nazareth produced 17 hits to claim a 13-5 East Suburban Catholic Conference victory. Matt Darling and Cole Kmet doubled for the host Lions.

In the second game, St. Viator led 3-1 after the fourth inning before the Roadrunners scored once in the fifth and tacked on 3 more in the sixth in a 5-3 decision. Sullivan doubled and drove in 2 runs, and Ben Dickey had 2 hits for St. Viator (11-5, 0-2).

Elk Grove 1, Plainfield Central 0: Leadoff hitter Matt Wary finished 3-for-3 and drove in the game's only run to give the host Grens a lift in nonconference play.

Wary and Brandon Post double for Elk Grove (10-3), and Wary also stole a base.

Joe Lopez allowed 4 hits with 4 strikeouts through 5 innings to get the win, and Christian Camacho tossed a pair of relief innings and got the save.

Conant sweeps: The host Cougars kep the bats moving against Waukegan, winning 11-5 and 6-1.

In the first game, Matt Fauth tripled and drove in 3 runs and Jack Lunkes had 2 hits. Conant trailed 4-1 early but used an 8-run third inning to take control as Ryan Roberts earned a win in relief.

In the second game, Joe Sekulich gave the host Cougars a quality start, allowing 3 hits and no runs with 3 strikeouts in 6 innings. Anthony Forte finished 3-for-4 with a triple and 3 RBI for the Cougars (9-5), while Ryan Roberts had 2 hits, including a double, Nick Roberts drew 3 walks and Matt Fauth scored 3 runs.

Barrington 16, Burlington Central 6 (5 inn.): Shane Yorton homered and drove in 5 runs, and Jake Coon homered and drove in 4 to power a nonconference win for the Broncos (11-6).

Among those with 2 hits for Barrington were Mitch Pfeiffer, Jake Petersen, Casey Dodge and Luke Johnson.

Fremd 10, Lake Park 4: A 6-run third inning put the visiting Vikings out in front, and they stayed there for a nonconference win.

Ian Bohn and Joe Uhrich both drove in 3 runs for Fremd (8-7), while Patrick Cudney doubled and walked twice.

Starter Jared Swenson allowed 2 earned runs and struck out five to get the win, and Ethan Hajdukovic and Alex Stremel each provided a scoreless inning of relief.

LZ takes 2 from Palatine: The Pirates lost 6-0 in the first game, then couldn't take advantage of a great pitching performance from Jack Tremely in the second, falling 1-0 on the road in nonconference play.

In the first game, the Pirates (6-9) struggled to solve Lake Zurich starter Rich Maegher, getting just 3 singles.

Trembley was tough in the second game, allowing 2 hits and an earned run over 5 innings. But Bears starter Matt Svanson tossed a complete-game 2-hitter with 5 strikeouts.

Schaumburg 9, Streamwood 0: The Saxons rolled past the Sabres in nonconferece play.

Mundelein 5, Rolling Meadows 1: Mundelein starter Jack Dahlinger allowed 3 hits over 6 innings to lift the hosts in matchup of nonconference Mustangs.

New Trier 7, Prospect 2: It was a 2-1 game heading into the sixth inning, when the visiting Trevians rallied for 5 runs on their way to a nonconference win. Jake Cavaiani doubled, while Trey Compton and Cliff Arnoux scored the runs for Prospect (12-4).

Stevenson 11, Hersey 1 (5 inn.): Stevenson starter Michael Kingery didn't allow the host Huskies to get much going, limiting Hersey (2-9-1) to 4 single.

Stevenson (10-4-1) produced 11 hits, including three for extra bases. Charlie Dempsey drove in Hersey's run with a hit in the fourth inning.

Leyden 4, Addison Trail 2: The host Eagles got a strong start from Kevin Nevarez on their way to a West Suburban Gold victory.

Tom Szopinski came up with a 2-run single, and Adrian Perez and Jeremey Borgess both had 2 hits hits for Leyden.

Nevarez improved to 2-1 with a complete-game victory and the Eagles upped their overall record to 8-6 and their Gold mark to 7-1.
