No doubt about Naperville North's victory

Even Naperville North's girls soccer players had to admit they were surprised by Friday night's nonconference result.

To beat Waubonsie Valley, ranked No. 1 in the Daily Herald Top 20, is one thing. To dominate as the No. 5 Huskies did in Aurora is another.

"They have amazing players and an amazing team," Huskies sophomore Ashley Santos said. "It was an awesome win for us to come out here and get that."

The Huskies outshot Waubonsie Valley 26-4 and held a big edge in possession time, keeping the Warriors on their heels and in their half of the field much of the game with a high press defensively and good ballwork offensively.

"Not one of our best performances, that's for sure," Warriors co-captain Tori Christiansen said.

Huskies goalkeeper Fiona Baenziger earned her fifth shutout of the season without having to make a save.

"We knew going into the game they're an incredible team, getting third last year in state," added Naperville North defender Morgan Krause. "We wanted to keep them from turning and getting a shot off. We kept pressing and pressing. We just kept playing as a unit, working out of the back and getting up the field."

To no one's surprise Naperville North senior Abbie Boswell figured in all three goals. She got started on the first shot of the game, just more than two minutes in, scoring from 20 yards out.

"We just came out super-motivated and we were just pumped up," Boswell said. "Everything just kind of went our way."

The Huskies (6-1) scored on the first shot of the second half also, but this time the goal came off the head of junior forward Alexis Dandridge from about 4 yards out following a Boswell cross in the 43rd minute.

"Momentum is sometimes the difference between winning and losing," Boswell said. "I'm just so glad our team never had any letdown."

The Ball State-bound Boswell buried a left-footed shot in the 45th minute for her eighth goal of the season.

The Warriors (5-1-3) faced a three-goal deficit with 35 minutes to play, but they didn't have a Chicago Blackhawks-like comeback in them. The Warriors, who also played No. 3 Barrington and No. 6 Neuqua Valley to 1-1 draws in the past week, seemed to lack energy Friday.

"We didn't come out with intensity," Christiansen said. "We need to learn from our mistakes and hopefully do better next game."
