Gary bishop, Notre Dame chief react to Cardinal George death

GARY, Ind. - Catholic leaders in Indiana are praising the late Cardinal Francis Church as a dedicated servant to the church.

The Most Rev. Donald Hying, bishop of the Diocese of Gary, says he was honored that George, despite being ill with kidney cancer, attended his installation in January.

Hying says George's intelligence, courage, leadership and service to the church "is a great blessing for all of us."

The Rev. John Jenkins, president of the University of Notre Dame, says George was "a leader in the American Church and a dedicated witness to the Gospel."

The Archdiocese of Chicago says George died Friday morning. He retired as Chicago's archbishop last fall.
