Baseball: Fox Valley roundup Wednesday, April 15

In a showdown between future Division-I pitchers, Arkansas-bound Brenden Heiss of Jacobs bested Xavier recruit Trey Schramm of Hampshire as the Golden Eagles won the Fox Valley Conference crossover baseball game 4-0 Wednesday.

Heiss held the Whip-Purs to 1 hit in 6 innings. He walked 2 and struck out 5. Closer Johnny Rohde retired the side in order in the seventh to notch his seventh save in as many opportunities.

Schramm lasted 6 innings, allowed 3 earned runs on 4 hits, walked 3 and struck out 7 for Hampshire (7-4-1, 1-3), which committed 5 errors.

Ryan Sargent, Bryce Pahl and Tim Randl drove in runs for Jacobs (15-3, 5-0).

Prairie Ridge 6, Cary-Grove 5: Senior Connor Schneider's one-out, bases-loaded single to center field in the bottom of the seventh scored Cal Aldridge and Jacob Carpentier to lift the Wolves to a walk-off victory. The loss was the first in Fox Valley Conference play for Cary-Grove (8-6-2, 4-1) despite a 2-run home run by Wyatt Mascarella. Larkin Hanselmann took the loss after surrendering 6 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits. He walked 3 and struck out 6 in 6⅓ innings.

Crystal Lake South 15, Johnsburg 1 (5 inn.): The Gators collected 18 hits, including 5 doubles, to cruise in nonconference play. John Constantino and Collin Chubb led the hit parade with 3 apiece. Winning pitcher Andrew Engelking held the Skyhawks to an unearned run on 1 hit and 2 walks. He struck out 2 in 4 innings for CL South (11-2).

Dundee-Crown 5, Grayslake North 2: Jim Welzien's RBI single keyed a 3-run sixth inning that lifted the Chargers to the Fox Valley Conference crossover win. Offensively, Brett Johnson (double) and Danny Denz each had 2 hits to lead Dundee-Crown (10-5, 4-1). Denz scattered 6 hits and a walk over 7 innings while striking out 12.

Huntley 6, Woodstock North 1: Winning pitcher Noah Konie held the Thunder scoreless on 5 hits and a walk and he struck out 5 to lead Huntley (5-8, 3-2) in Fox Valley Conference crossover action. Brandon Altergott doubled twice and scored twice, and Ben Reiva went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI to help the Red Raiders win for the fourth time in 5 games.

South Elgin 6, Waubonsie Valley 1: Ryan Weiss (3-0) followed up last week's perfect game by holding Waubonsie Valley (8-3, 4-1) to an earned run on 7 hits to even this Upstate Eight Valley series. Weiss struck out 6 without a walk in a complete-game victory. Kevin Barry went 1-for-2 with a double and 2 RBI, and Joey Roberson and Antonio Danesi drove in runs for South Elgin (7-1, 4-1).

St. Charles East 1, Elgin 0: Senior Michael Vyzral threw a 2-hitter for the Saints to outduel the 4-hitter thrown by Elgin's Clay White, who allowed an earned run, walked 1 and struck out 1. Vyzral walked 3 and struck out 7. White recorded both hits for Elgin (5-8, 2-3), which has dropped the first two games of the 3-game Upstate Eight River series without scoring a run. The Saints scored their only run in the third inning when Max Powers led off with a triple James Dale singled.

Bartlett 12, East Aurora 2 (5 inn.): The Hawks scored 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth to clinch their sixth straight win overall and fifth straight in the Upstate Eight Valley. Leadoff man Cameron Mays finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored 4 runs, Cory Krolikowski was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI and Tripp Paris doubled twice for Bartlett (8-3, 5-0). Jordan Flint pitched 5 innings, allowed 3 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5.

Batavia 9, Larkin 4: The Royals were limited to 4 singles and dropped their second straight to the Bulldogs in the Upstate Eight River. Andrew Chmiola and Jacob Quintanilla drove in runs for Larkin (3-7, 1-4). Jon Lenz went the distance on the mound. The senior allowed 9 runs on 9 hits in 6 innings, but only 4 runs were earned due to 3 Larkin errors.

Geneva 6, Streamwood 4: Matthew Simpson's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning snapped a 4-4 tie and the Vikings added a run in the sixth to even this 3-game Upstate Eight River series. Starting pitcher Jonah Seckel took the loss. He allowed 5 earned runs on 5 hits and 4 walks and he struck out 2 in 4⅓ innings. Joey O'Halloran was responsible for 2 of the 4 hits for Streamwood (3-7, 2-3).

Lisle 13, Westminster Christian 2 (5 inn.): The Lions erupted for 11 runs in the third inning en route to this nonconference win in Elgin. Adam Greene finished 2-for-2 with a double, and starting pitcher Peter Hahn absorbed the loss for Westminster Christian (6-7).
