Cary-Grove blanks Hampshire

Perhaps Hampshire girls soccer coach Sara O'Toole stated it best after watching Cary-Grove dispose of her Whip-Purs 7-0 in Fox Valley Conference crossover action in Hampshire Tuesday afternoon.

"Cary-Grove is a very talented, deep and fast team," said O'Toole. "They did a good job of attacking our weak spots. We are still trying to find a lineup that works. We played better in the second half and we are competing in every game."

Cary-Grove (3-4), which scored 2 goals in the first 7:10 of the match, displayed a balanced offensive attack with Kelly Stagart, Francesca Frericks (2 assists) and Genna Sobieszczyk each scoring 2 goals while Emma Baker added a goal for the winners.

"We attacked early with a lot of energy," said Cary-Grove coach Ray Krystal. "The team effort was good and we did a good a job of finishing. We were working well as a team."

With only 2:04 elapsed in the game, Stagart scored on a perfectly executed pass from Frericks to give the Trojans a 1-0 advantage.

Cary-Grove extended its lead to 2-0 on a goal by Frericks off a pass from Baker.

The Trojans, who outshot Hampshire (0-8) 15-4, scored 3 more times in the first half on Stagart's second goal of the first 40 minutes and 2 goals by Sobieszczyk. Her second goal came with 8.7 seconds left on an assist from Teagan Jones.

Cary-Grove led 5-0 at halftime.

The Trojans added 2 unassisted goals in the second half, one each by Baker and Frericks. Frericks' goal was the Trojans' seventh goal of the game and came at 28:51. Because the goal gave a Cary-Grove a 7 goal lead, the time was cut in half to 14:25.

"We have such a good attitude on this team," said Frericks. "As a freshman, I feel like I have really fit in. We have great leadership from the older players. The team has really incorporated me in the offense."

O'Toole is still experimenting with two goalies in the net. Kaila Kienzler, playing the first half in goal, registered 3 saves and Catie Kochanski picked up 4 saves during the second half.

"I am still looking to play with one goalie once division play starts," said O'Toole. "We are trying to find the best goalie for the job."
