Music notes: Robbie Fulks hits country with wile, wit at Fitzgerald's

Fulks on folk

Singer-songwriter Robbie Fulks has called Chicago home for just more than 30 years, and in that time he's developed a reputation for his unique take on country and folk music. A master of the genre, Fulks deftly maneuvers his way around the clichés and addresses the tropes with dark humor and snark but also a sincerity, a mix not often achieved in the genre. Enjoy his wiliness at Fitzgerald's. 9 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Fitzgerald's Night Club, 6615 Roosevelt Road, Berwyn. Tickets cost $15. (708) 788-2118 or fitzgeraldsnightclub.com.

Seattle style

Salvage some ripped jeans and dig out your flannel shirts for A Tribute to Seattle at Durty Nellie's. The night will include plenty of '90s-era alternative rock from Pearl Jam Tribute, Smells Like Nirvana and Seattle Soundz, an Alice In Chains tribute band. It's a 21-and-over grunge-tastic celebration, but chances are you're of age if you still have the right vintage flannel. 9:30 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine. General admission tickets cost $8. (847) 358-9150 or durtynellies.com.

Steve Winwood

Steve Winwood may not be as ubiquitous as he once was on the airwaves here, but he's still rolling with it with new albums and performances. The British import — who made a career out of populating '80s mix tapes with songs about the finer things, the high life and a gal named Valerie — brings his award-winning catalog to the Chicago Theatre for a night of guitar rock. 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at The Chicago Theatre, 175 N. State St., Chicago. Tickets start at $32.50. (312) 462-6300 or thechicagotheatre.com.
