214@100: Vanguard School's commitment to community service

Community service is a requirement, not an option, at Vanguard School. The alternative program, part of High School District 214, was built from teachers' and administrators' recognition that not all students thrive in a traditional high school environment.

Opened in 1997, the school allows daily service learning opportunities in addition to an intensely hands-on curriculum, offering the opportunity for students to apply classroom knowledge to real-life experiences outside of high school.

The unique community connection comes in addition to individual academic guidance and a focus on positive relationships, providing a renewed opportunity for success in high school and beyond.

• 214@100 is a celebration of District 214's centennial; 100 people, places, things and events that have shaped its unique history. To contribute ideas, email us at district 214@dailyherald.com.
