Kirk vote shows wisdom on climate

Talking about energy policy has been difficult in recent years. Society has become more politicized around every topic possible, and in the legislature, there are many conversations that are being bogged down by party rhetoric.

As an engaged citizen, I have been increasingly worried about the effects of climate change that we are seeing in our communities. With two children under the age of 3, I'm very concerned to see what will happen to the planet.

We have experienced more extreme weather events in the last decade than we have ever before. Climate and climate change have become hot button issues and most legislators are afraid to touch them with a 10-foot pole, even if they acknowledge the reality of them.

As a mother, I constantly think about the welfare of my children. But while I can buy them healthier food and more sustainable clothes and toys, I cannot buy them better air. So the approach that has recently been taken when addressing issues of energy and health has had me very worried.

It's because of this, that I'd like to thank Sen. Mark Kirk for his recent vote. It is tough to be the voice of reason when everyone is trying to make a political buck of a bad situation. Sen. Mark Kirk voted against the "hoax" amendment of the pipeline bill from Senator Whitehouse, thus agreeing that climate change is not only real but also man-made. Thank you,
