DuPage forest district offers summer camps

Kids can get their daily dose of nature through a variety of summer day camps at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.

"These programs are very popular and fill up quickly," said Joe Cantore, president of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. "So plan your child's summer adventure soon."

Camp FBW, Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center, Oak Brook. Kids ages 4-12 learn about nature art, camping and ecosystems through projects and hands-on exploration in half-day camps that can be combined for full-day fun. Several camps are already full for the morning and afternoon sessions, which run July 6 to 9 and July 20 to 23. Each half-day session is $120 for DuPage County residents, $145 for others. Horse Sense, Danada Equestrian Center, Wheaton. Youth ages 10-14 have hands-on experiences with horses and the daily activities of a working barn, plus arts, crafts, games and supervised lead-line rides. Camps run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, and five sessions are available: June 1 to 5, June 15 to 19, July 6 to 10, July 20 to 24, and Aug. 3 to 7. Kline Creek Farmhands, Kline Creek Farm, West Chicago. Kids ages 7-12 experience life on an 1890s farm, including chores and games. Camps run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, and seven sessions are available: June 15, 18 and 19; June 22, 25 and 26; July 6, 9 and 10; July 13, 16 and 17; July 20, 23 and 24; July 27, 30 and 31; and Aug. 3, 6 and 7. Riding Sense, Danada Equestrian Center, Wheaton. Youth ages 12-14 enjoy all of the fun of "Horse Sense" camp, plus a daily riding lesson. Camps run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, and five sessions are available: June 8 to 22, June 22 to 26, July 13 to 17, July 27 to 31, and Aug. 10 to 14. Wild by Nature, Willowbrook Wildlife Center, Glen Ellyn; Blackwell Forest Preserve, Warrenville; Greene Valley Forest Preserve, Naperville; and Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve, Darien. Youth ages 9-12 discover the natural history of DuPage County through safe exploration and play in wild places. Camps are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, and two sessions are available: July 6 to 9 and Aug. 3 to 6. Monday is spent at Willowbrook, Tuesday at Blackwell, Wednesday at Greene Valley and Thursday at Waterfall Glen. Each session is $100 for DuPage County residents, $125 for others. Wildlife Explorers, Willowbrook Wildlife Center, Glen Ellyn, and Herrick Lake Forest Preserve, Wheaton. Kids ages 6-8 learn how they're part of nature through games, activities and stories. The four-day camp runs 9 a.m. to noon July 13 to 15 at Willowbrook and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 16 at Herrick Lake, which includes a cookout.
