Softball: Fox Valley roundup

A 4-run fourth inning lifted South Elgin to a 5-4 victory over Larkin in an Upstate Eight Conference softball crossover on Wednesday.

The Storm (3-4) was led by Taylor Ford, who went 2-for-4 with a double, and Bailey McClure (1-for-2), who drove in 2 runs.

Stacey Bellack (2-for-4), Allison Kaiser (2-for-2), Brianna Pena (1-for-3) each had drove in a run and Annamae Valdivia earned the win in the circle. She allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits and 4 walks and struck out 3 in 3⅓ innings. Rachel Weiss closed matters with the save. Larkin jumped out to a 3-1 lead after 2½ innings as Haley Bohne (2-for-4) had 2 RBI. Bella Aguinaga added a run-scoring single and Ciara Alonso (2-for-2) scored 2 runs. Losing pitcher Sarah Hansen allowed 5 unearned runs on 7 hits.

CL South 7, Belvidere 1: Sam Burgard's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth was the first of 5 runs in the frame that padded the Gators' slim lead late in nonconference action. Kim Woods doubled in 1 of her total 3 RBI to cap the scoring in the sixth. The Gators collected 10 hits and gave up 10. Taylor Kassell tallied 2 hits and scored twice for CL South (7-1) while pitcher Chloe Skorija notched the win with 1 unearned run allowed on 8 hits in 6 innings.

Jacobs 5, Marian Central 2: Down 2-0 after 3 innings, the Golden Eagles (2-6) scored 4 in the fourth, thanks to Teagan Richman's grand slam. Jacobs added an insurance run in the sixth for a nonconference win. Richman totaled 4 RBI and allowed just 6 hits and 2 earned runs with 1 walk while striking out 3 in her 4-inning stint in the circle. Both Emily Borg (2-for-3) and Alexis Addante (double) scored runs, and Addante gave up 1 hit in 3 innings of relief for the save.

Sycamore 14, Hampshire 7: After the Whips' scored 3 in the sixth to close within 2 runs, the Spartans pushed across 6 in the bottom half and cruised to a nonconference win. Haley Widmayer went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI while Ellie Lapi (double), Lauren Egger, Renee Malecke and Gaby Silve each drove in a run for Hampshire (3-6), which totaled 11 hits. Widmayer suffered the loss and struck out 4 but was on the hook for 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits.

Metea Valley 6, Streamwood 5: The Sabres (3-6, 0-2) rallied back from a 3-1 deficit with 4 in the fifth but surrendered the lead on a walk-off single by Metea's Hailey Bacani for a UEC crossover loss. Streamwood amassed 10 hits. Jessica Daley went 3-for-4 and Rebcca Roncone (2-for-4) and Cayla Hawkins each had 2 RBI. Daley suffered the loss in the circle, giving up an unearned run with 1 hit and 2 walks.

Buffalo Grove 4, Cary-Grove 0: In a nonconference loss, the Trojans (1-4) collected 2 hits as the Bison scored twice in both the first and fifth innings. Amanda DeGroote gave up just 5 hits in 6 innings, allowing 4 earned runs and 3 walks.

Waubonsie Valley 14, Elgin 0 (5 inn.): The Maroons (0-9, 0-2) were no-hit in a shortened UEC crossover action, as Jenna Lombardo suffered the loss. Waubonsie Valley totaled 14 hits and winning pitcher Shannon Hohman struck out 11 Maroons.
