Man shoots, kills self in North Aurora home

A SWAT team found a man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following an hourslong barricade incident Wednesday afternoon in North Aurora, police said.

North Aurora Deputy Police Chief Scott Buziecki said the incident on the 700 block of Hidden Creek Lane began when a 911 caller indicated that he was distraught and planning to harm himself before hanging up.

A witness in the neighborhood reported hearing a gunshot before officers' arrival, Buziecki said. With the assistance of the Aurora Police Department and the Kane County SWAT team, a perimeter was secured around the residence to keep bystanders away as the SWAT members prepared to enter.

No one else was in the home during the incident, Buziecki said.

North Aurora police first issued its community alert at 2:35 p.m. and gave the all-clear at 5:22 p.m.

In the brief message issued by the village, the scene was declared safe and that residents were able to return to their nearby homes.

Buziecki said more information on the case would be released Thursday.
