Volunteers needed to help Citizens for Conservation with restoration projects

In honor of Earth Day, which is April 22, new restoration volunteers and CFC regulars who have been working year-round will join forces Saturday, April 18, to do their part to help in the continuing restoration of Citizens for Conservation's award-winning preserves.

Earth Day volunteers will work from 9-11 a.m. Meet at CFC's headquarters, the white farmhouse with a silo at 459 W. Hwy. 22 in Lake Barrington, across from Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. Bring work gloves and dress for the weather. Special Earth Day refreshments will round out the morning.

Possible activities include raking in rare prairie legume seeds at CFC's Grigsby and Flint Creek preserves. These legumes serve an important function in the prairies and can only be successfully sown in the springtime.

Volunteers also will plant woodland sedge plugs at CFC's Flint Creek South. The penn sedge is one of the most important plants in the oak savannas and can only be restored by planting plugs. They must get into the ground early in the spring to survive possible droughts. This plant is critical for successful savanna restorations.

For information, call CFC at (847) 382-7283.
