ECC Kids' College returns with summer learning adventures

Registration is open for "Kids' College," a summer enrichment day camp offering over 70 camps to children and teens, age 6 to 15. The program runs Monday through Thursday, starting June 22 through July 30. All classes are held on the Elgin Community College campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

The program embraces a noncompetitive, nourishing college learning environment and helps children stimulate their minds and satisfy their passion for art, entertainment, science, technology, and nature.

Camps range in price from $139 to $375. Early registration is recommended as space is limited. All classes are taught by experienced instructors. Materials are provided for the classes unless otherwise noted in the Kids' College brochure.

Some examples of Kids' College Camps include:

• Inventor's Camp for age 9-11: Get to know inventors and engineers by their work. Be inspired by Rube Goldberg and Thomas Edison in this class. Projects include egg drop design, catapults, balloon propelled cars, and wherever your imagination takes you. Camp runs 9 a.m. to noon June 22-25. Cost is $149.

• International Music and Rhythms for age 6-10: Explore a variety of cultures through music. Using hands-on materials from The Field Museum and music from the Putumayo Global Playground collection, students will: play drums from Africa; learn vocabulary from Bolivia, Creole, New Orleans, and Brazil; and practice the songs and dances of Greece and Puerto Rico, among other cultures. Camp runs 9 a.m. to noon July 13-16. Cost is $149.

• Lego Robotics Fun with Robots for age 7-15: Learn to build and program robots using Lego bricks. Students follow step-by-step instructions to build their robots and write suggested programs to get their robots working. Students will work in teams to problem-solve and brainstorm ideas. Camp runs 9 a.m. to noon July 6-9. Cost is $159.
