Sriram, not her allies win seats on Palatine Dist. 15 school board

Incumbent Manjula Sriram will survive a highly competitive school board race in Palatine Township Elementary District 15, but she failed to persuade voters to back her choices for the other two seats.

With all precincts reporting, winning a 4-year term is attorney Jessica Morrison, who led the pack with 3,984 votes, according to unofficial results. Sriram will get a second term with 3,242 votes.

Zubair Khan, an attorney, held the edge with 2,989 votes over Frank Annerino, who campaigned with Sriram, in fourth place with 2,887 votes.

Out of contention are David Gurion with 2,754 votes; incumbent Gerard Iannuzzelli, with 2,714 votes; and Joshua Perry, the only candidate to campaign on his own, with 1,139.

Sriram ran with Annerino and Iannuzzelli on one slate, railing against the district's deficit spending.

On the other slate were Morrison, Khan and Gurion, who supported the administration's contention that the district is headed in the right direction financially.

Reached late Tuesday, Sriram said she was disappointed in the low turnout, reported at 9.73 percent.

She expected more residents to head to the polls as the district faces major fiscal decisions, pointing to contract negotiations with several bargaining units in the next several years and to a plan to pay for costly repairs to the district's aging schools.

Morrison couldn't be reached for comment.
