Standoff near Naperville ends peacefully

A standoff situation with a suicidal man in an industrial building in an unincorporated area near Naperville's south side resolved peacefully Monday evening.

Will County sheriff's officers responded to the Wheatland Industrial Park, 10S160 Ramm Drive, after receiving a call at 1:30 p.m. from the man's father who said his son was suicidal, Will County Deputy Chief Rick Ackerson said.

"We were doing a welfare check, and he made a statement that he would kill anyone who would try to come in," Ackerson said.

Officers called in the Will County SWAT team and Oswego Fire and EMS to assist. After negotiating for four hours with the man, who was holed up in a business that he owns, officers didn't hear from the man for an hour, he said.

SWAT team members decided to go in, using tear gas that forced the man from the building, Ackerson said.

Nobody was injured throughout the standoff. The man was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
