Chicago's retired Cardinal George released from hospital

Chicago's retired Cardinal Francis George has been released from a hospital after being treated for pain and dehydration.

The Archdiocese of Chicago said Friday the causes for George's six-day stay at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood were "successfully addressed and he is feeling much better."

The statement provided no other details on his condition but said George is grateful for the care he received from Loyola's staff.

George said in January that doctors had run out of options for his cancer treatment and he is focusing on quality of life rather than a cure. He stopped receiving an experimental drug treatment in December because it wasn't working.

George stepped down as leader of Chicago's more than 2 million Roman Catholics in November. Blase Cupich became Chicago's archbishop.
