Baseball: Fox Valley roundup Thursday, April 2

Jacobs 1, Grayslake Central 0: Jacobs pitchers Brenden Heiss, Evan Liebau and Johnny Rohde teamed up to blank host Grayslake Central 1-0 on 2 hits in a Fox Valley Conference crossover Thursday. An Arkansas recruit, Heiss started and threw 58 pitches in 4 no-hit innings. He walked a pair and struck out 3. Liebau pitched 2 hitless innings with 3 strikeouts and eventually earned the win.

Collars tightened in the bottom of the seventh when Rohde yielded Grayslake Central's first 2 hits, but he notched his fifth save in as many opportunities when right fielder Mike Addante fielded a bloop hit and threw a runner out at third base to end the game. Jacobs (9-2, 2-0) scored its only run in the sixth inning. Matt Kozlak led off with a double and later scored on a one-out groundout to second base by Daniel Salomon.

Dundee-Crown 13, Woodstock North 0: The Chargers outhit the Thunder 10-3, scored 11 runs in the last three innings and played errorless defense to win this Fox Valley Conference crossover. Jared Ludwig enjoyed the only multihit game (2-for-4, RBI), but nine players had a hit for Dundee-Crown (6-1, 2-0), including doubles by Riley Alvarado (2 RBI), Jim Welzien (RBI) and Brett Johnson.

Prospect 3, Cary-Grove 2: The Trojans scored twice in the sixth inning to tie this nonconference home game, but Matt Nadler's RBI single in the top of the seventh was the difference for the Knights. Mark Smith and John Carone each singled and drove in a run for the Trojans. Shane Barlas took the loss in relief for Cary-Grove (4-5-2).

Crystal Lake South 5, Crystal Lake Central 1: Northwest Missouri State recruit Matt Schingel threw a 2-hit complete game without striking out a batter. He allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits and walked 3 in 7 innings. The Gators scored 3 times in the first inning, thanks to a balk and a 2-run single by Cameron Geisser. Mike Avella hit a solo home run for Crystal Lake South (5-2, 1-1).

Christian Brothers (Mo.) 18, Westminster Christian 1: Tyler Mamrot and Nathan Martinez managed the only hits for the Warriors, who committed 5 errors in this loss on their spring break trip. Nick Anguilo took the loss for Westminster Christian (2-2).
