Baseball: Lake County roundup

James Pendley went 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI, as Grant's baseball team beat Rockton Hononegah 5-2 on Thursday.

Spencer Lhotka and Ben Kusiak were both 2-for-3 for Grant (4-2), which pounded out 12 hits. Sam Fernandez earned his first win, pitching 5⅓ innings and allowing 2 earned runs. He struck out three. Chad Barron had 4 strikeouts in his 1⅔ innings to notch his second save.

Stevenson 8, West Jessamine 3: In Florida, Charlie Ling was 2-for-2 with a double and Justin Stark pitched 4 scoreless innings for the win.

Robert McGaha went 2-for-4 for Stevenson, which scored 4 runs in the second inning and never looked back. Christian Dutler was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Grayslake North 5, Waukegan 4: Jake Damore went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, and Danny Yates (2-for-4) also doubled twice for the Knights in the nonconference game.

Alex Carrillo was 2-for-4 with a double, while Merrick Gentile went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Brendan Taskovic allowed only 1 earned run over 5 1/3 innings. Jack Barreca pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for the save.

Mundelein 10, Conant 0: Nick Brune doubled, walked twice and drove in 2 runs, and Reese Dolan dominated on the mound for the Mustangs.

Dolan struck out nine and yielded only 3 hits in a five-inning complete game.

Mundelein (8-1) also got 3 RBI from Luke Peterson, who was 1-for-2.

Jacobs 1, Grayslake Central 0: In his first start of the season, senior lefty Justin Guryn pitched 3 scoreless innings in the Fox Valley Conference game.

Ethan LaBeck suffered the loss, as the visiting Golden Eagles scored in the top of the sixth. LaBeck threw 4 innings, striking out four.

Grayslake Central (4-3, 0-2) got singles from LaBeck, Ben Fitzgerald and Griffin Shepley.

Anna-Jonesboro 3, Vernon Hills 2: Ben Geren started on the mound for the visiting Cougars and threw 3 solid innings, allowing 2 unearned runs.

Brendan Keogh was the hard-luck loser, as he threw the remainder of the game, allowing only 1 unearned run. A day after playing a flawless defensive game, the Cougars made 3 costly errors, which led to all of Anna's runs.

Connon McNamara, Nick Marras, Joey Marras, Keogh and Brennan Reback all had hits for Vernon Hills.
