Endorsements: Only Burroway, Sabbe for Carpentersville village board
In the weeks since the Daily Herald issued its endorsements for Carpentersville village board, we've learned new information that caused us to seriously re-examine the race. Challenger Humberto Garcia, whom we previously endorsed, admitted that he lied on his Daily Herald questionnaire when he answered "no" to a question asking whether he had ever been arrested or convicted of a crime. Garcia was charged with domestic violence in October 2013, pleaded guilty and was fined. The plea was vacated after he completed the terms of a domestic violence program, court records show. Still, we've had concerns about criminal charges involving political candidates, and when we add to those the candidate's lack of truthfulness on the question, his stated remorse notwithstanding, we find we can no longer support him. We remain solidly behind incumbent Don Burroway and newcomer Jeffrey Sabbe. But among the remaining candidates we find none we can get behind enthusiastically, so we offer no endorsement for the third board vacancy.
