Camacho, Elk Grove get past Dundee-Crown
Timely hitting and solid pitching were the main ingredients that keyed Elk Grove's 3-2 win over Dundee-Crown in nonconference baseball action in Carpentersville Monday afternoon.
Winning pitching Christian Camacho excelled on the mound for the Grenadiers. Camacho, who tossed a no-hitter for 3 innings, gave up 1 run on 2 hits in 6 innings of work. He struck out 4 with 3 walks. Giving up an unearned run in the seventh on his own error, Jonathan Maday was able to earn the save.
"I would have loved to have run Christian out there in the seventh because he pitched so well," said Elk Grove coach Terry Beyna. "He had an 18-pitch inning and his pitch count was getting high. It's too early in the season and too cold to push him."
The Grens scored first with 2 runs in the second off losing pitcher Dan Medford. Chuck Fleming and Taylor O' Connor collected RBI singles as Elk Grove (2-2) grabbed an early lead.
The Grens scored an unearned run in the fourth to take a 3-0 advantage.
Brett Johnson, who had both of D-C's hits in the game, broke up Camacho's no-hitter with a single to lead off the fourth inning. Johnson provided the Chargers' first run of the game with an RBI double in the sixth to make the score 3-1.
The Chargers scored an unearned run in the seventh and had the tying run on third, but pinch hitter Ben Prigge struck out to end the game.
With five games this week, D-C head coach Jon Anderson employed five different pitchers in the game.
Medford, the losing pitcher tossed 3 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits. The Chargers (3-1) got one-inning stints on the mound from Riley Alvarado, Jared Ludwig, Jim Welzien and Dan Denz. The foursome gave up 1 unearned run on 3 hits.
"With five games this week, we wanted to set up our pitching for the week," said Anderson. "Our relievers were outstanding. All four pitched well. We had our chances but couldn't capitalize on enough of those chances. Overall, I was pleased with our performance today."
Elk Grove collected 8 hits and left nine runners on base. The Grens were led offensively by Brandon Post with a 3-for-4 effort which included a double. Fleming and O'Connor collected run-scoring singles for the winners.
