For an active mind, ensure an active body

In the March 12 edition of the Daily Herald, it is reported that state Rep. Ron Sandack of Downers Grove wants to strip away the state law that requires a student to exercise.

Perhaps Rep. Sandack could visit a few schools, read publications about the physical health of America's citizens, and be reminded of the benefits of exercise.

When Prospect High School opened its doors in the fall of 1957, the classrooms were ready, teachers were ready, but the gyms were awaiting completion. Students traveled through the hallways between classes, watched over by teachers on hall duty. As one of those "guards," I was overwhelmed by the energy of the students as they hurried to their next class.

To this day, some 53 years later, that is my strongest memory of those days.

Sandack needs to become aware of the relationship between physical exercise and learning. Teachers are well aware of it. I hope Mr. Sandack learns that an active body can help ensure an active mind.
