St. Charles police warns residents of phone scam

ST. CHARLES - Police in St. Charles are warning residents about a scam in which people posing as Internal Revenue Service agents are demanding money.

Authorities say telephone calls are being made that threaten in a recording that if the person hearing the message does not send money they will be arrested.

Those who get calls are reminded that the IRS usually contacts people through the mail. The IRS also says anyone who gets such a call can be confident they are dealing with an impostor and should simply hang up.

Authorities say this particular scam that typically targets the elderly has been around for years. However, the number of people who have been getting such calls are increasing.
