Experience a prairie burn with the Schaumburg Park District

Don't miss a hot time at Spring Valley's Sunset Fire and Picnic on the Prairie.

The Schaumburg Park District's Spring Valley will burn a prairie from 6 to 8:30 p.m., April 11 at the Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road.

"Prairie burns are important to our area," said Dave Brooks, manager of conservation services. "Guests will have a great opportunity to learn while seeing one in action."

Kick off the evening with a picnic behind the Nature Center. Participants may bring their own food or purchase grilled food and beverages at the event. During the picnic, staff will explain why fire is so beneficial to the health of natural areas and demonstrate how it's used to safely manage these areas. Trained staff will conduct a sunset burn of a portion of Spring Valley's prairie, which participants may view from a safe distance.

Admission is $3 per person or $12 per family of six. All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Alternate rain date is April 18.
