Presentation on Accessible and Visitable Housing, April 15 at Arlington Heights Village Hall

A presentation on Accessible and Visitable Housing, sponsored by the Arlington Heights Commission for Citizens with Disabilities, will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 7-9 p.m., in the Board Room located on the 3rd floor of Village Hall, 33 S. Arlington Heights Road.

The speaker John S. Gonzalez, a Technical Staff employee with the International Code Council (ICC), will explore the expansion and refinement of accessible housing requirements in the building codes. The International Building Codes (IBC) provides information on accessibility in all situations where people may reside - institutional and residential facilities; permanent and transient; multifamily and single-family detached.

If you are interested in attending this free presentation, please email David Robb, the Village's Disability Coordinator at drobb@vah.com or call him at 847-368-5793.

The presenter will discuss how the International Building Code (IBC) incorporates federal accessibility standards into the building code. Both scoping and technical provisions will be covered, including the concept of "visitability" for townhouses and single family homes.

IBC is certified by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development as a "safe harbor" document for compliance with the Fair Housing Act. Discussions will include IBC coordination with the Federal Housing Authority and the 2010 ADA Standard for Accessible Design requirements.
