Bean points Hoffman Estates toward a win

Mary Bean was a point guard for Hoffman Estates coach Lindsey Hamma's freshman girls basketball team this winter.

On Thursday, Bean made her point on the softball diamond for Hamma, the Hawks varsity softball coach, whose team played its season opener.

While leading off and catching, Bean went 3-for-5 with a double to help lead the Hoffman offense in a 12-4 victory over visiting Elgin.

Bean caught a combined 8-hitter from junior Tracy Osimowicz (5 innings, 4 strikeouts) and senior Charlotte Allan (2 innings, 1 strikeout).

Junior Jordyn Fera, freshman Giselle Velazquez, Osimowicz and Galan all doubled for the Hawks, who host Loyola on Saturday at noon.

Rolling Meadows 12, Highland Park 1 (5 innings): Senior Lauren Hattory (3-for-4, 3 runs, double), senior Jordan Giachetti (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI, 2 doubles), sophomore Paige Connor (2-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 run) and junior Megan King (2-for-3, double, RBI) were multiple hitters for the visiting Mustangs (1-1).

Sophomore Lydia Schultz (1-0) earned the win by tossing a 1-hitter with 8 strikeouts. She has not given up an earned run in 8 innings.

Junior Meghan Slowik tripled for Meadows while sophomore Elizabeth Elkins had a double.

"We were a little disappointed on Wednesday (5-1 loss to Taft) but the kids did a nice job to come back this game," said Meadows coach Tony Wolanski, "Jordan (Giachetti) and Lauren (Hattory) had big games at the plates."
