Mom says 3-year-old alerted her to house fire before escape
ELGIN, Ill. (AP) - A woman says she and her daughter escaped a house fire in suburban Chicago after being alerted to it by her 3-year-old.
Fire officials say they responded to the blaze at a home in Elgin on Wednesday morning. Officials say the woman told them that she and her daughter climbed through a first-floor window shortly before firefighters arrived. They got the fire under control in about 10 minutes.
According to officials, the fire was found in a bedroom, but there was extensive smoke damage on the home's first floor. Damages were estimated around $15,000, and the Red Cross is helping the family find a place to stay during repairs.
The mother and daughter were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. The fire's cause is under investigation.
