Barrington springs into title game

Barrington's softball team advanced to the championship of its own Spring Fling tournament with a 4-0 shutout over Zion-Benton on Tuesday.

The Fillies (2-0) will face defending Class 4A state champion Warren (2-0) for the title of the eight-team tourney Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

The two team are hardly strangers to each other.

They have met the last two years in the Barrington supersectional at the Fields of Dreams.

Barrington won 8-3 in 2013 and lost 3-1 last year.

Barrington senior ace Keenan Dolezal (2-0) threw a 2-hitter with 13 strikeouts.

The Fillies struck for 2 runs in the second and sixth innings.

In the second, after one out, they received four straight hits by Jenna Fingerman, Nicole Chapman (2-for-3), Dolezal and finally a 2-run double by Julie Magro.

In the sixth, an RBI groundout by Dolezal brought home freshman Julia Kozar while the second run came when Magro reached on an error allowing freshman Jenna Patino to cross the plate.

Rachel Macdonald also doubled for the Fillies.

Hersey 16, Maine West 7: Sophomore Kaitlyn Denton (3-for-4) belted 2 home runs while seniors Isabella McGinnis and Cassie Zouras (2-for-4) each had one in Hersey's 18-hit attack in the consolation semifinals of Barrington's Spring Fling.

The Huskies will face Deerfield (1-1) for fifth place today at 4:30 p.m.

McGinnis' 2-run blast came in her first varsity at-bat in the sixth inning.

Denton (1-1) earned the win for the Huskies (1-1) who had 5 doubles, two by Anna Johnson (3-for-4) and one apiece by Jessica Schmiederer (2-for-3), Sofia Cano and Jackie Bednar (2-for-4).

Katie Wingerter was 2-for-5 for the winners while pitcher Grace Feldkamp had a homer for Maine West (0-2).

Hersey coach Molly Freeman was going against her former Illinois-Chicago softball coach, Mike McGovern, who is now the Maine West coach.

"It's always bittersweet," said Freeman, who also starred on the softball diamond at Fremd. "I wish him (McGovern) the best in his first year. I had a lot of good memories (at Illinois-Chicago) and it was good to see him. I know he will get them going and wish him all the best."
