Endorsements: Zipp, Loffredo and Meyer in Gavin 37

On the ballot, Gavin Elementary District 37 will look like it has a contested race for school board. But unfortunately one candidate is now out of the running for a trio of four-year terms, and two separate two-year terms have no candidates at all, raising the bigger issue of how the school district can attract more interest in such a crucial job. Incumbents David A. Zipp and Joe Loffredo and newcomer Jennifer Meyer have our endorsement after the fourth candidate, James M. Miller III, resigned from the board of education last week. Miller received a county board appointment to the Lakes Region Sanitary District board and bowed to the state's attorney's opinion that holding both positions would be a conflict of interest. Miller said he has not campaigned for the Gavin seat since he's known the sanitary district appointment was in the works. Voters should back Zipp, Loffredo and Meyer, but just as important, they should consider personally becoming more involved in the governance of local schools.
